02 - Fountain with the Statue of St. Florian
In the middle of the main square of Frýdek, Zámecké náměstí (Castle Square), stands one of the city´s significant landmarks, the fountain with the statue of St. Florian. St. Florian was the patron saint to whom everyone prayed to protect the city from fires, floods, and wartime disasters. Every night, during his patrol through the city, the Frýdek night watchman would call out, "Svatý Floriáne, toť té dědiny patrone, chraň nás od věčného ohně," which translates to "St. Florian, the patron saint of this village, protect us from eternal fire." Frýdek has experienced numerous major fires over the years, including in the years 1592, 1688, 1702, and more. On April 11, 1848, a devastating fire struck the city center. The stone octagonal fountain itself dates back to 1863. The cast iron statue of St. Florian, depicted as a Roman soldier in armor with a banner in his left hand and a water jug to extinguish a house fire in his right hand, was erected in 1894. Water for the fountain was supplied through pipes from hollowed-out larch tree trunks, all the way from the base of Mount Prašivá. After the construction of a new water reservoir at Frýdecký les (Frýdek Forest), the fountain was supplied with water from there. During the communist era, the fountain, like the entire historical core, was neglected and fell into disrepair, without a water supply. Everything changed in the 1990s when, like the entire square, the fountain with the statue of St. Florian underwent a comprehensive reconstruction. Today, water once again flows from the fountain, adding to the historical character of the surrounding area.
